I’ve spent the majority of the day working from the balcony at home here in St Kilda. For a couple of reasons: 1) Because I can and 2) Because it’s very very very ultra super duper warm at the moment and any breeze you can get is gratefully received.
Further to these two benefits (yes, number 1 is a benefit: because ‘doing something because you can’ is the rock-and-roll of modern-working-from-home life, don’t you know?), this has been an altogether educational experience: Indian Miner birds probably emit as many decibels in one squawk as the roar of an average V8 (and, I’d wager, with more vigour); the next door neighbour is altogether a bit of a busy-body; there are two types of drivers – those that approach a speed bump (like the one outside the flat) with care and those who see it as an opportunity to test the flight capabilities of their truck (and fail, though you wouldn’t know it by the noise).
So, this is rather a cushty start to the new year; working from a warm yet breezy balcony might just be the most luxury working arrangement I’ve ever mustered. Will the rest of the year be quite so cushty? Will I manage to get a little beer ice cream fridge out here too? Will I sail through the development of the next website project, my largest website development attempt yet, using Drupal (which I’ve never tried) without biting a chunk out of my Mac Book Pro? Will I manage to get more tattoos and smile serenely throughout the inking process? Will I discover a way to write markup whilst surfing (simultaneously at the same time)? I hope so.
And I wish everyone a cushty 2008 too; no challenges, no obstacles, just plain sailing and happy drinking; why not?
