Hire 14.11.07

Instead of just doing a few-month trip to Australia, tacked onto the end of our Europe trip, The Lady and I have decided to stay-on in Melbourne for a whole year (at least): why head back to the UK and work when you can do that here and avoid winter altogether? As such, we’re now settled into a nice flat, in a nice part of town, and I’m on the job hunt – an altogether full-on experience.

So, I’ve been popping in and out of several local agencies, saying “hello” and trying not to shake too much; I’ve been all over SEEK.com.au, hitting a big grey ‘APPLY NOW’ button for anything which mentions ‘Graphic Design / Web Design / Graphic / Web / Web Graphic Design’ and similar; I’ve been all over MyCareer.com.au which is another job portal but the first (and only?) major job site I’ve used which actually has a decent interface, straightforward functionality and a nice, short application form; I’ve grown tired of the in-disposable Melbourne.Gumtree.com.au, applying for the odd decent looking job and avoiding the $$MAKE DOLLARS WORKING FROM HOME$$ wierdos; I’ve hit-up Authentic Jobs, Krop and The Gig Board (even doing half a day’s work for a New York-based establishment only to find that intensive CSS skinning of a pre-made app to match an existing site’s design isn’t something I ever want to get into) with varying levels of success.

I’ve updated my Online Portfolio, put together a big fat never-gonna-try-to-email-this PDF and several other smaller PDF’s for the more demanding potential employers (seriously, is it even possible to provide a PDF portfolio of design works in under 1mb? Have these people ever tried to do this?).

I’ve taken down my old, weird homepage and I’m working on a more straightforward homepage which will have this here new Tumblelog embedded in it. I’ve re-directed the feedburner account to the Tumblelog feed.

I’ve even trimmed down the beard (but kept the ‘Mo’ for Movember). I haven’t sorted out my semi-matted-together hair though, and I won’t, dammit!

I’ve gotten pretty good at answering the following questions: Which Uni did you study at?; Can you really code HTML by hand?; No but really, without any help or without Dreamweaver?; Where do you get that code from then?; What do you really love doing?; Can you hit the ground running?

So, here I am, a “designer on the cutting edge of new media with bleeding-ruler-edge design skills and creativity to match, able to handle the high demands of any client, with time-management skills and intense eye-for-detail, to boot!” (- to put it in typical job-advert speak), available for hire
